Following the discovery of the bodies of two young sisters hanging from a tree in the Lakhimpur Kheri district on Thursday, the Uttar Pradesh Police said that four suspects had been taken into custody.

Further questioning is ongoing, according to Arun Kumar Singh, additional superintendent of police in Lakhimpur Kheri.

“Four accused in the matter have been taken into custody. Interrogation is underway,” said Additional SP.

The bodies of two young sisters were discovered hanging from a tree on Wednesday night in the Lalpur Majra Tamoli Purva hamlet, which is under the jurisdiction of the Nighasan police station in the Lakhimpur Kheri district.

Villagers from the area and the relatives of the girls protested while marching and blocking the road to seek justice for the victims.

A few kilometres from the village, near the Nighasan crossing, the deceased’s family mounted a protest after accusing three men of rape and murder.

The police force and the superintendent of police (SP) for Lakhimpur Kheri, Sanjiv Suman, hurried to the scene of the demonstration and informed the locals that the offenders would face harsh punishment.

While talking to the media, Lucknow range inspector general (IG) of police Laxmi Singh said, “The dead bodies of two girls were found hanging from a tree in a field outside a village in Lakhimpur Kheri. No injuries were found on the bodies.”

“Other things to be ascertained after the post-mortem We’ll try to expedite the probe,” IG further said.

The police officer in attendance pleaded with the people to break their blockage and assist with the autopsy.

Congress has raised concerns about the state’s law and order while keeping track of the situation.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lashed out at the state administration after the event, saying, ” The incident of the murder of two sisters in Lakhimpur (UP) is heart-wrenching. The relatives say that those girls were abducted in broad daylight. Giving false advertisements in newspapers and on TV every day does not improve law and order. After all, why are heinous crimes against women increasing in the UP?”

However, more information is awaited.
