The English Literary Society of Govt. P.G College, Sec-1, Panchkula organised a Two-Day Skill Building (Hindi to English)Translation Workshop titled ‘Building Bridges’ on January 29th and 30th, 2024, in the Language Lab. of the college . Mrs. Harpreet Kaur Baweja, Assoc.Prof. in English led and conducted the workshop by engaging the participants in rigorous practice exercises using digital content on multi-media.
While inaugurating the workshop, the Principal Yashpal Singh interacted with the students, appreciated their spirit to learn and motivated them to keep participating in such skill-building initiatives taken by the college faculty in line with the goals of NEP-2020.
Vineeta Gupta, Head of the English Department, along with the entire English faculty were present during the opening ceremony and encouraged the students. The first day of the workshop focused on understanding the nuances of Hindi and English language expressions, emphasising the importance of cultural context in translation.
Beyond linguistic proficiency, participants were encouraged to grasp underlying cultural metaphors. Registration for the workshop was facilitated through a shared Google form, attracting approx. 25 students from various streams.
The second day delved into more complex sentences and technical terminology, incorporating engaging activities and exercises to make the workshop both interesting and informative. The event concluded with a translation contest where participants worked on Test- worksheets containing translation exercises. Promoting bilingualism to facilitate cross-cultural communication was also one of the motives of the workshop.
