A 20-year-old man and five of his friends were arrested for sexually assaulting a minor girl in Chilpur Mandal. The man is the son of a local Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) leader in the Jangoan district. Four of the five are boys under the age of 18. On social media, the accused posted a video of the assault as well.

The accused, G Shyam, is a former Mandal Praja Parishad (MPP) member from the Telangana town of Sreepathi Palli and the son of a local TRS official.

On social media groups, Shyam—a member of the same village—had posted a video of the 16-year-old girl being sexually assaulted. Four young boys and their friend T. Sambaraju were also named as suspects in the case for aiding Shyam.

After the video went viral and the girl’s family got into a fight with Shaym and his family, the incident was only discovered on Monday morning, October 3. The Ghanpur police detained his five accomplices and arrested Shyam as a result of the girl’s mother’s allegation.

“A case has been registered against Shyam and his friends under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (Punishment of Rape) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) Act,” said Ghanpur Assistant Commissioner of Police, D Raghu Chander.
