Landlady Seeks ‘Hookup-Friendly’ Tenant, Rejection Stuns Flat-Seeker

In a shocking incident from Gurugram, Shivangi Shah shared her experience of being denied a rental home because of her serious relationship. She had posted on the “Gurgaon Flat and Flatmates” Facebook group, which she had joined to find a place to rent.

Shivangi came across a post offering a room in a flat, but it wasn’t clear whether the woman was the landlady or an existing tenant. What became clear, however, was the unusual reason behind the rejection.

When Shivangi asked about the room, the woman asked her if she had a date, which Shivangi believed was a date for the move-in. After it was clarified, the woman was asking Shivangi if she had a boyfriend. Upon knowing this the woman further questioned if she has been in a ‘serious relationship’ to which Shivangi said yes.

The conversation took a very strange turn when the lady announced that she was open to a casual relationship and particularly wanted a flatmate who was open to casual hookups. This shook Shivangi to her very foundations.

The viral post caught widespread attention, with many users in social media expressing shock and confusion. Some believed the woman was interested in Shivangi or her boyfriend. Others thought the woman was interested in women. “What is happening in this world!” one user exclaimed.

The post, viewed over 80,000 times, catalyzed a wider discussion about the arbitrary and idiosyncratic reasons landlords might have for refusing tenants.
