A heart-rending story from Siddhpur Kaithauli village in Budaun district of Uttar Pradesh. Moments of merriment of a bride turned into tears of despair as the bridegroom did not turn up along with ‘baraat’ over some last-minute demand for additional dowry. The tragic saga unfolded on Tuesday, July 9, when long angst-ridden hours were wiled out by the waiting bride, awaiting the groom amid much fanfare and jubilation. The wedding procession from Rajthal, that was to take place that day, never turned up despite all preparation and gathering of the guests.
The bride’s father, Dhanpal, claimed that in the evening they patiently waited for a long time that extended till midnight; however, the groom and his processional never came. Horse-drawn carriage and band were sent to fetch the groom but he never accompanied them. When faced with sulking members of his family and disappointed guests, Dhanpal dialed the authorities and informed the police through emergency services. Next morning, realizing that the groom had left the venue intentionally, the bride and her father visited Bisauli police station to file a formal complaint demanding justice for what they termed an extortion bid.
He further said the groom’s family had agreed to a no-extras wedding, but they turned up on the wedding day demanding an additional Rs 4 lakh over and above the settled amount of Rs 8 lakh. When he expressed his inability to pay that amount, the groom’s party did not live up to their commitment, leaving the bride and her family in a lurch.
The incident has angered the community, raising many questions on dowry practices despite their legal prohibition. Authorities are investigating the matter; the bride’s family is keen on seeking justice over what they regard to be a betrayal of trust and solemn promise.
