A tripoint, or trijunction, triple point, or tri-border area, is a point where the borders of three nations or subnational entities meet. As of 2020, there are 175 international tripoints, and almost half are found in rivers, lakes, or seas.
Tripoints may have symbolic significance, signifying cooperation or tensions between adjacent countries. In Europe, for example, the European Union offers financial support to promote transborder schemes to foster cultural exchange, tourism, and neighborhood development.
China tops the list with 16 tripoints, followed by Russia with 14 and Austria with 9. At the lowest end of the list are countries such as Japan, Malta, New Zealand, and the Philippines, which have no tripoints because they are island nations. Island nations with only one or two bordering nations, including Portugal, Denmark, and America, also do not have tripoints.
Historically, some places even had quadripoints, pentapoints, or hexapoints, but shifting borders and treaties generally prohibit such multipoints from enduring. Antarctica, though unofficially not divided, has six overlapping claims of territory by nations, making it a multipoint example.
1. Trojmedzie – Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic
Located in the Beskid Mountains, Trojmedzie is a picturesque location where Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic converge. Tourists can cross borders through tiny wooden bridges, observe border signs, and hike or picnic amidst lovely foothills and villages.
2. Drielandenpunt – Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany

6. Treriksrøysa – Norway, Finland, and Sweden
For thrill-seekers, Treriksrøysa in northern Scandinavia features one of the most isolated tripoints in the world. Located by a concrete cairn by Lake Goldajávri, it's encircled by forests, lakes, and marshes. Guests get to enjoy the midnight sun during summer or the northern lights during winter.
7. Picnic Table Tripoint – Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary
Located just outside Bratislava, the Picnic Table Tripoint is a whimsical attraction with a triangular picnic table that has the flags of Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary painted on it. It's ideal for nature walks, biking, and taking in the sights of the Danube wetlands.
