In a heart-wrenching incident, at least five tourists lost their lives today when the vehicle they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a deep gorge on Zojila Pass in Ganderbal district. The mishap occurred on the Srinagar-Leh national highway, sending shockwaves through the serene landscapes of the region.
The ill-fated vehicle, carrying a total of eight occupants – seven tourists and a driver – met with the accident as treacherous weather conditions and snow-covered terrain posed challenges for safe travel. The vehicle reportedly lost control and veered off the road, leading to the fatal fall.
Upon receiving information about the incident, the local authorities, including the Sonamarg police, swiftly responded and initiated a rescue operation. Tragically, five individuals lost their lives in the accident. The victims, hailing from Kerala, were part of a tourist group exploring the picturesque region.
Three survivors from the accident were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention. Their condition remains critical, and medical teams are working diligently to provide the necessary care.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Ajaz Ahmad Awan, sustained severe injuries in the accident and has been referred to SKIMS Soura for specialized treatment.
