Tragedy struck on Sunday morning in Ajitwal, a town in Punjab’s Moga district, as
Sukhwinder Singh, a 23-year-old groom, en route to his wedding, accompanied by his four-year-old niece and two other relatives, lost their lives in a fatal collision with a stationary truck parked on the highway.
This devastating accident occurred around 6 am as the family was travelling from Fazilka to Ludhiana to partake in the celebration of Sukhwinder Singh’s wedding. Alongside Sukhwinder, his niece Anshdeep Kaur, his brother-in-law Angrez Singh (24), who hailed from
Bhambanwattto village in Fazilka, and another relative, Simran (25) from Ferozepur, all lost their lives in this tragic incident. The Station House Officer (SHO) at Ajitwal police station,
Sub-inspector Gurmail Singh, reported that the car’s driver, Mahinder Pal Singh, and Anshdeep’s mother, Seema Rani, sustained severe head injuries in the collision and were promptly rushed to a hospital. Their conditions are currently described as critical, adding to
the ongoing anguish of the family. Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was the result of the truck driver’s improper parking on the highway.
This led to a collision between the Swift Dzire car carrying the groom and his family and the stationary truck.
Tragically, the groom, his niece, and brother-in-law lost their lives at the scene, while the other occupants were hurried to the hospital. The ill-fated journey was intended to lead them to Baddowal, Ludhiana, where Sukhwinder Singh’s wedding was scheduled to take place on the very day when the unfortunate accident occurred in Ajitwal. Authorities have detained the truck driver, and they are in the process of registering a First Information Report (FIR) under sections 304A, 337, 338, and 427 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Ajitwal police station.
