Amidst the ongoing war in Gaza, top US legislators have issued a formal invitation for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to deliver a speech to Congress, demonstrating the latest show of support for the Jewish nation. The joint invitation from Republican and Democratic leaders comes as the International Criminal Court considers issuing an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Palestinian territory. It is important to note that Washington, despite facing backlash, has not officially recognized the State of Palestine.

“To build on our enduring relationship and to highlight America’s solidarity with Israel, we invite you to share the Israeli government’s vision for defending democracy, combating terror, and establishing a just and lasting peace in the region,” stated a letter from American politicians.

Interestingly, if he accepts the invitation, Netanyahu would surpass the late former British PM Winston Churchill as the foreign leader who has delivered the most speeches to a joint session of Congress. Meanwhile, the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 36,000, while in the West Bank it has crossed 500.

Biden Announces Roadmap to Israel-Gaza Ceasefire

On Friday, American President Joe Biden announced that a Gaza ceasefire and the release of Hamas hostages are two of the three phases of an Israeli proposal to resolve the conflict. The 81-year-old described the “comprehensive” proposal as a “roadmap to an enduring ceasefire,” detailing its main components. According to Biden, the first stage entails a six-week “complete ceasefire” during which Israeli soldiers will evacuate “all populated areas of Gaza.” The second phase of the plan calls for the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, to take place over approximately six weeks. With support from the US and the international community, a comprehensive plan for Gaza’s reconstruction and stabilization would begin.
