Customs seizes 2 kg gold dust worth over Rs 1 crore
MUMBAI: Customs officials at Mumbai airport intercepted an Indian family arriving from Singapore and confiscated two kilograms of gold dust, valued at over Rs one crore. The gold was cunningly concealed in the undergarments of the couple and their three-year-old child. This seizure resulted from profiling efforts by Mumbai Airport Customs Officers on September 12, 2023. Meanwhile, in another incident, Air Customs Intelligence at Cochin International Airport in Kerala apprehended an individual with over 700 grams of gold paste concealed inside his body, with an estimated worth of Rs 40 lakh.
Hygiene lapses lead to iconic Bademiya Eatery’s closure
MUMBAI: Mumbai’s renowned eatery, Bademiya, celebrated for its delectable kebabs, faced a shutdown after Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials discovered hygiene issues during a recent inspection. The 76-year-old establishment in Colaba, South Mumbai, was sealed due to the presence of cockroaches and rats in the kitchen, following numerous hygiene complaints. Moreover, the inspection exposed the fact that Bademiya lacked an official license from the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
School cook arrested for raping 9-year-old student
MUMBAI: A school cook in Vasai East was arrested for sexually assaulting a nine-year-old student. The incident occurred during school hours when the accused lured the girl to the kitchen with the promise of special food while she was on her way to the washroom. After the assault, he gave her Rs 10 and threatened her not to disclose it. The girl, who lives with her parents, informed her mother about the pain she was experiencing, leading to the mother discovering the money and the truth. The accused was later assaulted by residents and arrested by the police.
102 killed in fire incidents in 5 years: Fire brigade
MUMBAI: In the past five years, Mumbai has witnessed 102 fatalities in fire-related incidents, according to data from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB). Among these fatalities, 34 occurred between 2021 and 2022, the highest in this period. An additional 20 deaths were recorded between 2019 and 2020, followed by 18 between 2020 and 2021. These statistics come in the wake of the recent tragic fire at the Galaxy Hotel in Santacruz, which claimed three lives. Despite the concerning numbers, MFB officials note that major fire incidents leading to casualties have been on the decline, attributing this trend to increased safety awareness and proactive rescue efforts.
