In a major diplomatic initiative, the United States has introduced a “Gaza Bridge” proposal designed to extend the current ceasefire between Israel and Hamas beyond Ramadan and Passover. The move, announced by the White House, aims to provide additional time for negotiations that could pave the way for a permanent resolution to the long-standing conflict.

Proposal Outlined in Doha

US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and National Security Council Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Eric Trager, presented the proposal in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday. They stated that the initiative seeks to extend the phase-one ceasefire, allowing for renewed humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza and setting a framework for comprehensive peace talks.

Key Elements of the Proposal

The Gaza Bridge Proposal rests on several critical components:

  • Hostage-Prisoner Exchange: Hamas is expected to continue releasing hostages in exchange for prisoners, following an established formula from previous negotiations.
  • Extended Ceasefire: The proposal aims to prolong the ceasefire period to ensure that humanitarian aid can be delivered without disruption.
  • Diplomatic Framework: During the extended ceasefire, the US will work closely with its allies to negotiate a durable and permanent ceasefire.

Urgency and Immediate Demands

Witkoff emphasized the urgency of swift implementation. Through mediation with Qatar and Egypt, Hamas was clearly instructed that the proposal must be enacted soon. An immediate condition of the deal requires the release of dual US-Israeli citizen Edan Alexander. Failure to meet these deadlines, he warned, would force the US to respond accordingly.

Criticism of Hamas’ Tactics

The US administration has also criticized Hamas for its contradictory stance in the negotiations. Witkoff accused Hamas of publicly claiming flexibility while privately making demands that are impractical without a permanent ceasefire in place. “Hamas is making a very bad bet that time is on its side. It is not,” he stated, underscoring the administration’s readiness to impose further measures if the deadline is missed.

What This Means for the Region

The Gaza Bridge Proposal represents a significant effort by the US to stabilize the region and secure a lasting peace between Israel and Hamas. By extending the ceasefire, the proposal aims to create a window for diplomatic progress and humanitarian relief, crucial for rebuilding trust and establishing a sustainable framework for peace. However, its success hinges on Hamas’s cooperation and willingness to engage in serious negotiations.

As international mediators and global leaders prepare to contribute to this effort, the world watches closely to see if this bold proposal will finally break the cycle of violence and bring a durable solution to the conflict in Gaza.
