Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a strong response on Thursday after US President Donald Trump announced a steep 35% tariff on Canadian goods. Mark Carney assured citizens that his government remains committed to defending the nation’s businesses and workers amid ongoing trade tensions.
Mark Reaffirms Trade Negotiation Stand
He addressed the issue through a post on social media platform X, where he reiterated Canada’s unwavering position during current negotiations with the United States.
“Throughout the current trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses. We will continue to do so as we work towards the revised deadline of August 1,” Carney said.
Shared Fight Against Fentanyl Crisis
Apart from trade, Carney touched upon the joint efforts between the US and Canada to combat the fentanyl crisis, highlighting cross-border cooperation.
“Canada has made vital progress to stop the scourge of fentanyl in North America. We are committed to continuing to work with the United States to save lives and protect communities in both our countries,” he added.
Economic Unity and Development Efforts
The Canadian Prime Minister also underlined efforts at home to unify the country’s economy and push forward key development projects.
“We are building Canada strong. The federal government, provinces and territories are making significant progress in building one Canadian economy. We will build a series of major new projects in the national interest. We are strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world,” Carney stated.
Meanwhile, his comments come as Canada prepares for further talks with US officials, with the revised trade negotiation deadline set for August 1.
