US President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine might eventually become part of Russia. Furthermore, he pushed for a deal where the US would gain access to Ukraine’s rare minerals in exchange for continued aid.
In an interview, Trump stated, “They may make a deal, they may not make a deal. They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday. But we are going to have all this money in there and I say I want it back.” His remarks raised concerns about the future of U.S. support for Ukraine.
Talks with Putin and Hope for Peace
Recently, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to him, Putin “wants to see people stop dying.” As a result, Trump expressed optimism that the war might soon end.
When asked whether the conversation took place after he assumed office on January 20, Trump responded, “I’ve had it. Let’s just say I’ve had it… And I expect to have many more conversations. We have to get that war ended.” His statement suggested that he intends to maintain dialogue with Russia moving forward.
Possible Meeting with Zelenskyy
Meanwhile, Trump announced that he would “probably” meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the coming weeks. At the same time, White House officials are preparing for discussions with Zelenskyy during the Munich Security Conference.
Retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, told The Associated Press that the administration is finalizing details. Additionally, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Kellogg will attend the summit. They may also participate in crucial talks with Zelenskyy and his team.
Trump Wants U.S. Aid Linked to Ukraine’s Minerals
Moreover, Trump stressed that U.S. support for Ukraine should come with benefits for America. Specifically, he wants Ukraine to provide access to its rare earth minerals in exchange for continued aid. On Monday, he confirmed that his team is actively working on this agreement.
