Palestinians in Gaza celebrated a breakthrough on Wednesday as mediators confirmed a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel. The truce, negotiated in Doha, Qatar, is set to take effect on Sunday, January 19, bringing hope for an end to 15 months of devastating conflict. Hamas officials stated that the agreement includes full Israeli military withdrawal, the return of displaced Palestinians, and a commitment to permanently cease hostilities.
Despite the announcement, Israeli forces have continued operations in the Gaza Strip, reportedly killing at least 30 Palestinians since the truce was declared. In Israel, at least 1,139 people were killed during Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, and over 200 individuals remain captive.
