Palestinians in Gaza celebrated a breakthrough on Wednesday as mediators confirmed a ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel. The truce, negotiated in Doha, Qatar, is set to take effect on Sunday, January 19, bringing hope for an end to 15 months of devastating conflict. Hamas officials stated that the agreement includes full Israeli military withdrawal, the return of displaced Palestinians, and a commitment to permanently cease hostilities.
Despite the announcement, Israeli forces have continued operations in the Gaza Strip, reportedly killing at least 30 Palestinians since the truce was declared. The war, which began in October 2023, has resulted in immense loss on both sides, with over 46,700 Palestinians killed and more than 110,000 injured. In Israel, at least 1,139 people were killed during Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, and over 200 individuals remain captive.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude to U.S. President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump for their roles in advancing the agreement. While the truce has been welcomed by many, the ongoing violence highlights the fragile nature of peace efforts in the region.
