A huge stampede took place at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday when thousands of passengers dashed to catch trains for Mahakumbh. The stampede took place on platforms 14 and 15, and some people were found unconscious in the chaos. According to reports, at least four women fainted due to extreme overcrowding and were rushed to the hospital along with 15 injuries.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Railway Minister tweets on the stampede situation, “Situation under control at New Delhi railway station (NDLS) Delhi Police and RPF reached. Injured taken to hospital. Special trains being run to evacuate sudden rush”

The reason for the occurrence was said to be due to a massive crowd of tourists, a lot of whom didn’t have reserved tickets. Indian Railways have asserted that the problem is currently being handled.

“15 people had been injured in a stampede-like situation at New Delhi Railway Station. When Prayagraj Express was standing at platform no. 14, lots of public were present at the platform. Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani were delayed, and passengers of these trains were also present at platform no. 12,13 and 14. As per the information, 1500 general tickets were sold – that’s why the crowd became uncontrollable. There was a stampede-like situation at platform no. 14 and near the escalator near platform no. 1,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway, KPS Malhotra, said.

Officials revealed that two Kumbh Special trains had been put in place to meet the sudden rise in commuters. Nevertheless, a massive inflow of pilgrims towards Prayagraj resulted in the train becoming overfilled.

Delhi Police and railway authorities reached the location to contain the situation and establish order. Enquiries are going on as to how large quantities of ticketless passengers managed to enter the railway station.
