The New Orleans New Year’s Day attack left the city in shock after a pick-up truck driven by Shamsud Din Jabbar plowed into a crowd celebrating on Bourbon Street. The attack, which occurred around 3:15 a.m., killed 10 people and injured dozens more. Authorities have since identified the suspect as a 42-year-old former US Army soldier.
The FBI has confirmed the incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism rather than a DUI. In addition to the vehicular assault, Jabbar reportedly opened fire on law enforcement officers, injuring two before being killed in a firefight with police.
Jabbar, an American citizen born and raised in Texas, was wearing full body armor during the attack. Eyewitnesses claim he exited the truck armed with an assault rifle. A black ISIS flag was reportedly found in the vehicle, further linking the attack to potential terrorist motives.
Law enforcement is still investigating Jabbar’s background, motives, and whether he had any accomplices. Mayor LaToya Cantrell has described the incident as a “terrorist attack,” and the FBI is leading the investigation.
Despite over 300 police officers being present in the area, the suspect managed to carry out the attack on Bourbon Street, a location renowned for its vibrant New Year’s celebrations.
Police superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick stated:
“He was driving his pick-up truck at a very fast pace, trying to run over as many people as he possibly could.”
The attack has reignited discussions around public safety and counterterrorism measures in high-profile locations during major events.
The FBI issued a statement emphasizing their collaboration with local authorities:
“This morning, an individual drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing a number of people and injuring dozens. The subject then engaged with local law enforcement and is now deceased. The FBI is the lead investigative agency, and we are working with our partners to investigate this as an act of terrorism.”
