Russia launched a drone attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Wednesday, injuring at least three people and causing damage to multiple buildings, according to city officials.
Blows started resonating over the city skies almost simultaneously with the message of Ukraine’s air force to prepare for incoming drones. Mayor Vitali Klitschko claimed that air-defence systems have been actively pushing off the attack.
The attack partially demolished two floors of a residential building and debris damaged a non-residential structure in another district, Klitschko added. Emergency services are assessing the damage.
Throughout nearly three years of invasion, Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukrainian towns and cities away from the frontline in a pattern of airstrikes aimed at breaking Ukraine’s resilience and infrastructure.
The attack on Kyiv underlines the plight of civilians that has continued in the extended conflict. Officials have asked residents to be on the lookout and heed safety measures in case of air raid warnings.
