On the eve of the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the nation in a video message. He praised Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine, calling them the “defenders of Russia’s future.” In his speech, he acknowledged the sacrifices of the military and assured them of increased support, including advanced weapons and equipment.
Putin emphasized that Russian troops were the “main heroes of Defender of the Fatherland Day,” a national holiday recognizing military service. “Special words of congratulations to our soldiers and officers, participants of the special military operation. Today, risking their lives and showing courage, they resolutely defend their native land, national interests, and the future of Russia,” he stated.
He carefully referred to the war as a “special military operation,” a term mandated by Russian law. Using words like “war” remains illegal in Russia and can lead to prosecution. “It is you who are the main heroes of Defender of the Fatherland Day, which our entire country celebrates,” he added.
Commitment to Strengthening Russia’s Military
Putin reaffirmed his commitment to modernizing the military. “Today, as the world is changing impetuously, our strategic course for strengthening and developing the armed forces remains unchanged,” he declared. He stressed that Russia would continue enhancing its army and navy, ensuring national security and long-term stability.
He also awarded medals to soldiers who fought in Ukraine, reiterating that their battle was for the “peace and future of our people.” His address came just a day after Russia launched a massive drone strike against Ukraine.
Ukraine Faces Largest Drone Assault Since War Began
On Saturday night, Ukraine experienced its largest drone attack since the war’s onset. Russia launched 267 drones, of which Ukrainian air defense intercepted 138. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that this was the biggest drone strike by Moscow in nearly three years of conflict.
Ukraine’s Air Force Command reported that 119 drones were jammed before they could cause damage. Despite this, emergency services responded to fires and destruction caused by the remaining drones.
Zaporizhzhia was among the hardest-hit cities. Ivan Fedorov, head of the regional military administration, said a 53-year-old woman was injured and hospitalized. Several homes and cars were damaged in the Shevchenkivskyi district, and one house caught fire before emergency responders extinguished it.
As tensions escalate, both Russia and Ukraine continue to engage in intense military confrontations.
