Powerful 6.6-Magnitude Quake Hits Southwest of Australia, No Tsunami Alert

A powerful 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck deep in the Indian Ocean southwest of Australia on Wednesday, just days after another seismic jolt rattled the region. However, authorities confirmed there was no tsunami threat following the latest tremor.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake’s epicenter was located about 2,069 kilometers (1,283 miles) southwest of Albany, a coastal city in Western Australia. It occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), which typically increases the likelihood of surface shaking.

This tremor follows a smaller earthquake that recently struck closer to Western Australia, raising concerns about increased seismic activity in the area. Despite that, the Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center stated there was no tsunami warning for Australia or Antarctica after Wednesday’s quake.
