National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq clarified that neither the opposition nor the government has formally requested a meeting of the negotiation committee, according to The Express Tribune. He expressed his readiness to arrange a meeting on short notice if both sides—Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government—agree.
Past Efforts and Current Delays
Ayaz Sadiq mentioned his earlier communication with PTI leader Asad Qaiser on January 4, during which he conveyed PTI’s interest in discussions to the government. However, no further steps have been taken.
Previously, the process faced delays due to Sadiq’s absence from Pakistan. Now back, he assured that a meeting could be arranged promptly, but noted that arranging dialogue between PTI’s negotiating committee and Imran Khan is not his responsibility.
Background on PTI-Government Talks
The PTI and the PML-N government began negotiations in December 2024 after months of political tension. Their initial demands include:
- The release of political prisoners.
- A judicial inquiry into events on May 9 and November 26.
Two negotiation rounds have already occurred:
- December 23: The first meeting marked the start of talks.
- January 2: During the second round chaired by Sadiq, PTI emphasized the need for more frequent access to Imran Khan to finalize a charter of demands.
Upcoming Negotiations and Deadlines
PTI leader Shibli Faraz indicated that discussions could continue beyond the January 31 deadline set by the party. He noted that an extension could be considered if positive developments occur. Speaking on DawnNewsTV’s Dusra Rukh, Faraz said,
“The deadline is still 20 days away, and by that time, it would become clearer which way the dialogues are headed.”
Chief Minister’s Optimism
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur expressed hope for progress now that Ayaz Sadiq has returned. Gandapur added that informal discussions with Imran Khan are ongoing and that a meeting with the negotiating committee may take place soon.
