New Orleans Attack Suspect Found with ISIS Flag, Explosives

The suspect behind the tragic crowd attack in New Orleans, which left 10 people dead and over 35 injured, was discovered with an ISIS flag and multiple explosive devices. The FBI has classified the incident as a potential “act of terrorism.”

The attack occurred early Wednesday morning when the suspect drove a rented Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck into a crowd celebrating New Year’s Day in the French Quarter. He then opened fire, killing 10 and injuring more than 35 people. The suspect was shot and killed in a confrontation with the police.

Truck Rented from Turo

Law enforcement sources revealed that the white pickup truck, used in the attack, did not belong to the suspect. It was rented through Turo, a car rental platform, and was registered to a Houston man. Investigators are exploring the truck’s history and the suspect’s possible connections to terrorism.

Suspect’s Identity and Motive

The suspect has been identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen. Authorities are investigating his associates and potential terrorist ties. Despite ISIS losing its stronghold in Syria in 2019, the group has continued to carry out attacks in various regions. The FBI is working to determine if Jabbar’s actions were coordinated with any terrorist factions.

FBI’s Investigation and Terrorism Links

The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation, with officials examining Jabbar’s political and religious background. They are also looking into whether the suspect had connections with known terrorist organizations.

Witness Statements and Law Enforcement Response

Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the suspect as being “hell-bent on creating the carnage.” After crashing into the crowd, he swerved around barricades and shot at officers, injuring two. The attack unfolded at a time when the French Quarter, a popular tourist destination, was packed with people.

City leaders have condemned the attack, with Councilman Oliver Thomas stating:

“As we search for a motive, remember there is no making sense of evil.”
