Reliance Jio Platforms Ltd has inked a deal with SpaceX to launch Starlink’s broadband internet services in India. The partnership is conditional on SpaceX receiving approval from the regulators to sell Starlink in the nation. This comes after Bharti Airtel recently partnered with SpaceX to offer similar services.
Enhancing India’s Digital Infrastructure
Mathew Oommen, Group CEO of Reliance Jio, highlighted the disruptive nature of the collaboration. Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability and accessibility of high-speed broadband in this AI-driven era, empowering communities and businesses across the country,” Oommen said.
The deal enables Jio and SpaceX to capitalize on synergies between their offerings. Jio will sell Starlink solutions via its retail outlets and website, making the satellite-based broadband service more broadly available.
Broadening High-Speed Internet Throughout India
The collaboration seeks to improve broadband penetration throughout India, including remote and rural areas. Jio, the largest mobile operator globally in terms of data traffic, and Starlink, the foremost low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation operator, will use their synergies to provide quick and efficient internet services.
Jio will not just sell Starlink hardware but will also establish customer support facilities for installation and activation. The effort is part of Jio’s vision to ensure smooth internet availability to businesses, small and medium enterprises, and communities in India.
Starlink Supplements Jio AirFiber and Jio Fiber
Starlink will supplement JioAirFiber and JioFiber by providing connectivity to hard-to-reach areas. The alliance facilitates a rapid and cost-effective roll-out of high-speed internet offerings.
Jio and SpaceX are also exploring other regions of collaboration for further developing the digital ecosystem in India.
“We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorisation from the Government of India to provide more people, organizations and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services,” President and COO at SpaceX Shotwell said.
This alliance reflects Jio’s vision to deliver strong, future-proof connectivity solutions, connecting India and bridging the digital divide.
