Imran Khan Sentenced to 14 Years in Landmark Corruption Case

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan has received a 14-year prison term in a significant high-profile graft case. The court found him guilty in a major graft case involving corruption claims surrounding the Al-Qadir Trust, a controversy that sparked national debate. The case further complicates the future of Imran Khan, a leader who once symbolized change and accountability.

What Is the Al-Qadir Trust?

The Al-Qadir Trust is a welfare organization established by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in 2018. The trust operates a university near Islamabad, focusing on spirituality and Islamic teachings. This vision was inspired by Bushra Bibi, who is known for providing spiritual guidance. When he was Prime Minister, Khan also promoted the trust at official events.

Allegations Against the Trust

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah accused the trust of being a conduit for Khan to receive bribes in the form of valuable land donations from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain. The trust reportedly received 60 acres of prime land in Punjab’s Jhelum district, valued at 7 billion Pakistani rupees ($24.7 million), and another parcel near Khan’s Islamabad residence.

Sanaullah contended that the university land site remains unutilized, raising suspicions over the misuse of funds. Even the anti-corruption agency summoned Hussain regarding the land donations, but no concrete evidence of misappropriation of funds surfaced.

Acquittal Brings Relief

The court has acquitted Khan and his wife of all charges, which is a great relief for the beleaguered leader. Khan, who described Bushra Bibi as his spiritual guide, reiterated his commitment to transparency and spiritual values. The verdict of the court has marked a pivotal moment in the political future of Khan as Pakistan’s political landscape remains turbulent.
