Tremors Felt in Kolkata and Imphal
After the Thai earthquake, tremors struck Kolkata and Imphal on Friday. The seismic activity, which began in central Myanmar some 50 km east of Monywa City, triggered temporary panic among locals.
People in Kolkata said they felt mild tremors, with slight movement observed in objects hung on walls. But officials assured that no casualty or property loss was reported in the city.
At the same time, in the Thangal Bazar locality of Imphal, which is an area with old multi-storey buildings, the earthquake caused alarm. People fled the buildings out of precaution. Police officials later ascertained that no damage to the building was reported.
The quake has again brought into focus northeastern India’s exposure to hazards, since it is located in a seismically active zone. The authorities are on high alert and advising people to remain on their guard.
