Taiwan’s defense ministry reported an alarming increase in Chinese military activity near the self-governed island, detecting 59 Chinese aircraft, nine warships, and two balloons within a 24-hour period until 6:00 am (2200 GMT) on Tuesday. This marks the highest tally since China’s record-breaking deployment of 153 aircraft in October.
China Escalates Pressure Following Taiwan’s ‘Hostile Force’ Remark
The surge in military presence comes just days after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te referred to China as a “foreign hostile force”, a statement that has further strained relations. Beijing, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, has ramped up military drills, cyber operations, and espionage to assert its sovereignty, a claim that Taipei strongly rejects.
Of the aircraft detected, 54 were involved in joint combat patrols, an indication of China’s ongoing military pressure. The Chinese foreign ministry defended its actions, calling them a “resolute response” to external interference and support for Taiwan’s independence.
US-Taiwan Relations Under Scrutiny
China also criticized the United States for revising its State Department fact sheet, which removed a reference stating, “We do not support Taiwan independence.” Beijing condemned the move, accusing Washington of using Taiwan to “contain China” and embolden separatist forces.
The United States remains Taiwan’s primary security ally despite not officially recognizing it diplomatically. The tensions have heightened as Washington continues arms sales and strengthens military cooperation with Taipei.
Taiwan Accuses China of Espionage and Infiltration
Taiwan has expressed growing concerns over China’s alleged espionage and infiltration efforts, particularly within its military ranks. Officials report a sharp increase in prosecutions related to Chinese spying, with both retired and active military personnel being key targets.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) warned that China’s “aggressive military expansion” is jeopardizing regional peace, with MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng labeling Beijing as an “undeniable troublemaker” in the Taiwan Strait.
As China intensifies its pressure, Taiwan continues to bolster its defenses, vowing to safeguard its sovereignty against Beijing’s escalating military maneuvers.
