Iranian Ambassador Iraj Elahi has reaffirmed the significance of Chabahar Port in boosting regional trade and strengthening India-Iran ties. Speaking at an event marking the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, Elahi described the port as the “golden gateway” connecting the Indian Ocean to Central Asia and the Caucasus.
He highlighted that Iran and India signed a long-term agreement last year to operate the port, underscoring its role in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC). He stated:
“Our economic ties are growing in many fields. The Chabahar Port serves as a critical link for India to access Central Asia, fostering trade and connectivity.”
Historical & Cultural Ties Between India and Iran
Elahi also emphasized the deep historical and cultural links between the two nations, noting:
“Persian is recognized as one of India’s classical languages, showcasing our shared heritage.”
He further highlighted bilateral cooperation on global platforms like SCO and BRICS, referencing a recent meeting between Iran’s President Pezeshkian and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BRICS Summit in Russia, which he described as a new chapter in cooperation.
Iran’s Progress Since the Islamic Revolution
Reflecting on the impact of the Islamic Revolution, Elahi acknowledged the challenges Iran has faced but also celebrated the nation’s resilience. He pointed out Iran’s advancements in:
- Health & Education: Iran has made significant progress in healthcare and literacy.
- Science & Technology: The country leads in nanotechnology and biotechnology.
- Women’s Empowerment: Of 3.2 million university students in Iran, nearly 50% are women. Their participation in government roles has also increased.
- Space Technology: Iran has successfully launched over 10 satellites into orbit using indigenous technology.
Iran’s Foreign Policy & Regional Stability
Elahi outlined Iran’s foreign policy goals, stating:
“Our priorities are protecting national interests, ensuring security, and expanding economic diplomacy. We advocate peace through regional dialogue.”
He also reaffirmed Iran’s unwavering support for Palestine, condemning long-standing human rights violations in the region.
Iran’s Stance on Nuclear Development
Addressing concerns about Iran’s nuclear program, Elahi clarified:
“Iran’s nuclear activities are peaceful and comply with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations.”
He blamed the United States for withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and criticized European nations for failing to uphold their commitments.
