THE TEMPLE IS 500 YEARS OLD
The history of this temple is said to be about 5 centuries old. In 1468, a businessman named Bhanda Shah started building it. After the death of Bhanda Shah, the construction of the remaining temple was completed by his daughter in 1541. It was named Bhandashah because it was constructed by Bhandashah Jain.
Shantilal Dhariwal, president of the temple trust, said that even after 500 years of its construction, the floor of the temple still remains smooth. From this it appears that ghee comes out from the floor of this temple.
In this Jain temple, which is about 108 feet high from the ground, the fifth Tirthankar Lord Sumatinath Ji is seated on the original altar. This entire temple is divided into three floors. This temple is made of red sandstone and marble. The decoration inside the temple is very beautiful. Magnificent work of Matheran and Usta art has been done in it. According to historians, the wall paintings and sculptures inside this temple are also very interesting. The floor, ceiling, pillars and walls of the temple are decorated with sculptures and paintings. The temple is in the category of national protected monument.
CONTRACTOR TESTED AND REGRETTED
The temple was built by Bhandashah Oswal who was a ghee trader. When a meeting was going on with the contractor building the temple regarding the construction of the temple, a fly fell and died near the ghee kept in the shop, then Seth picked up the fly, rubbed it on his shoe and threw the fly away. The contractor sitting nearby was surprised to see all this.
After this the contractor decided to test Seth. Then the contractor told Seth that it would be appropriate to use ghee to strengthen the temple for hundreds of years. Seth started arranging ghee. When the construction of the temple was starting, Seth started pouring ghee in the foundation of the temple and seeing all this the contractor was surprised and then he apologized to Seth and said that I was just testing you. After this Seth said that I donated this ghee in the name of God. It will have to be used in the foundation of temple construction.
USE OF ITALIAN MARBLE AND JAISALMER STONES IN CONSTRUCTION
The specialty of the foundation filled with desi ghee can be said to be buried under the ground. But this grand temple built on the foundation is also famous for its carving art. The use of Jaisalmeri yellow stone and Italian marble in the construction of the temple makes it even more unique.
The temple has carvings along with wall paintings.
The temple has depictions based on many historical buildings, wars and contemporary events. The 16 paintings in the highest dome of the temple tell the story of the life and character of the Tirthankaras.
Foundation equal to the height of 4 elephants
There is a popular saying about this temple that its foundation is as high as the height of 4 elephants and the entire mound was filled with layers of limestone available at that time all around. The height of the temple is so much that one can see the view of the entire Bikaner city by standing on its third floor. On completion of 500 years of the temple, a special cover and decoration was issued by the Department of Posts. This is the only temple in the entire world whose foundation was filled with ghee.
