The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released a list of 301 feature films eligible for Oscars and Indian films that have made the cut include Vivek Aghnihotri’s Kashmir Files, Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi , SS Rajmouli’s RRR, and Rishab Shetty’s Kantara.

On the moment Vivek Agnihotri tweeted.  BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: #ThekashmirFiles has been shortlisted for #Oscars2023 in the first list of@TheAcademy  . It’s one of the 5 films from India. I wish all of them very best. A great year for Indian cinema.

The list also includes Pan Nalin’s Chello Show  (Last Film Show), which is India’s official Oscar entry, Marathi films Me Vasantrao, Tujhya Sathi Kahi Hi, R Madhavan’s Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, Iravin Nizhal and Kannada movie Vikrant Rona. Documentaries All That Breathes by Shaunak Sen and Kartiki Gonsalves’ The Elephant Whisperers are also part of the list.

Out of these 4 movies have already made it to nominations that are Chello Show, RRR , The Elephant Whispers, and All That Breathes.   The reminder list incorporates motion pictures that can formally contend in different classifications yet simply highlighting in the list doesn’t ensure that the film will progress in the last selections of the Foundation Grants, to be reported on January 24.

The Kashmir Files released in March 2022 narrates the events of 1990s in Kashmi. The film helmed by Vivek Aghnihotri starred Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar among others. The film although was a major success received backlash and praise from certain sections of society.

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12, 2023 at Los Angeles’ Dolly Theatre. TV presenter Jimmy Kimmel will be presenting the Oscars . India’s history with the Oscar entries for the last few years were – Koozhangal, Jallikattu, Gully Boy, Village Rockstars, Newton, Visaranani, all of which have failed to make the Oscar shortlist. The only Indian films to have been nominated for an Oscar so far have been Mother India, Salaam Bombay and Lagaan.
