In the midst of Diwali festivities nationwide, an incident of alleged communal tension has emerged over Diwali lights at a society in Navi Mumbai. Videos circulating online show members of two communities engaging in a heated argument over the matter. The altercation reportedly took place at Panchanand Society in Taloja Sector 9, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The dispute reportedly began after Muslim residents objected to the decoration of public spaces and roads within the society for Diwali. The viral footage captures both groups exchanging heated words.

Why Was There Objection to Diwali Lights in the Society?

Reportedly, in June, some Hindu residents had previously raised objections to Muslim residents bringing goats onto society premises for Bakri Eid celebrations. As a result, Muslim residents are now allegedly challenging the installation of Diwali lights in common areas. A prior society decision from June, ahead of Bakri Eid, established that no festive or cultural activities would take place in shared spaces. Muslim residents are now reportedly calling on society officials to uphold that decision for Diwali as well.
