An 18-year-old woman in Iowa, USA, identified as Sumaya Thomas, was arrested after she called 911 to avoid going on a date with a man she met on a dating app. Thomas informed the dispatcher that her abusive ex-boyfriend of two years was outside her home sending her threatening text messages.
Thomas claimed the man threatened to “hit, kick, punch, and stab” her and also revealed that she was pregnant with his baby. She mentioned that most of their conversations took place on Snapchat, as reported by The Independent.
When police arrived, they encountered a man leaving the house. He informed the officers that he had started talking to Thomas on a dating app a week earlier, and after moving their conversation to texting, they had planned to meet. He provided the investigators with the text and dating app chats, confirming the messages were from Thomas’s phone number.
The false allegations led to the man being detained for over an hour. During a third interview with the police, Thomas admitted to making the fake accusation because she had “cold feet about meeting him and no longer wanted to.”
On June 16, Thomas was detained on two counts of false reporting, both misdemeanors. She was later released from the Johnson County Jail.
