The spare tyre, once an essential part of every car, is slowly disappearing from new models in India. Carmakers are now replacing it with a puncture repair kit and portable tyre inflator instead.

This shift is driven by the rise of electric vehicles (EVs) and new space-saving designs. Battery packs and weight reduction have made spare tyres less practical in many cars.

Here’s a look at all the affordable cars in India that no longer come with a spare tyre.

Tata Tiago.ev

The Tata Tiago.ev was among the first affordable cars in India to be sold without a spare tyre. The space under the boot is occupied by battery modules. Instead, Tata offers a puncture repair kit, portable inflator, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) for emergencies.

Tata Punch.ev

The Tata Punch.ev, another electric vehicle from Tata Motors, also skips the spare tyre. It includes TPMS, a puncture repair kit, and a tyre inflator to help drivers handle tyre issues.

Tata Harrier

The Tata Harrier comes with a spare tyre only in higher variants. The base Smart and Pure trims get only a puncture repair kit and a tyre inflator. This is part of Tata’s strategy to reduce costs and weight in entry-level variants.

Tata Safari

Similar to the Harrier, the Tata Safari’s base Pure and Smart variants also do not include a spare tyre. The top-end trims come with larger 18-inch alloy wheels and a full-sized spare.

Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

The strong hybrid versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara don’t have space for a spare tyre because the hybrid battery pack occupies the boot. Instead, Maruti provides a puncture kit, inflator, and TPMS.

Maruti Suzuki Victoris

All variants of the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, the brand’s new mid-size SUV, lack a spare tyre. The company says this helps improve fuel efficiency and reduce vehicle weight.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Only the turbo variants of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx miss out on a full-size spare tyre. These versions include a puncture kit and tyre inflator instead.

MG Comet EV

As India’s smallest electric car, the MG Comet EV does not have space for a spare tyre. It comes with a tyre sealant gel, inflator, and TPMS for convenience.

MG Windsor EV

The larger MG Windsor EV also skips the spare tyre to make space for its battery layout and boot capacity. It includes a tyre sealant, inflator, and TPMS.

VinFast VF6 and VF7

Both the VinFast VF6 and VF7, EVs from the Vietnamese brand, come without spare tyres. They include puncture kits and inflators, with the VF6 using self-sealing tubeless tyres.

A Growing Trend Among EVs

More electric and hybrid vehicles in India are dropping spare tyres to save space, weight, and cost. Carmakers now rely on puncture repair kits and self-sealing tyres as practical replacements, marking a new trend in the auto industry.
