The KTM Duke 160 has been launched in India officially, opening the gateway of KTM to the popular 160cc commuter motorcycle market. At ₹1.85 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the Duke 160 sits slightly above its direct competitor, the Yamaha MT 15 Version 2.0, by around ₹15,000.

Tone set by KTM 200

The Duke 160 is based on the tried-and-tested platform of the KTM 200 Duke but has a detuned engine slightly. It is driven by a 164.2cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that makes 18 bhp and 15.5 Nm of torque, matched to a six-speed transmission and assist and slipper clutch for smooth and responsive shifting. This engine makes more power than the Yamaha MT 15 V2, and does so at a lower point in the rev range, giving an exciting ride to city riders as well as new riders.

Impressive Suspension

Design-wise, the Duke 160 takes after the aggressive design cues of the KTM Duke series. It comes with a steel trellis frame, 43mm upside-down WP front forks, and preload-adjustable WP mono-shock at the back, providing a dominating and sporty riding position. The bike also has contemporary equipment like LED headlamps with DRLs, LED tail lamps, and dual-channel ABS with an off-road mode, providing added safety.

'Techno-fied' with BT

One of the stand-out features is the presence of connectivity features not found in this class: Bluetooth connectivity through the KTM Connect App allows riders access to music, phone call control, and turn-by-turn directions through the LCD instrument display, swapping the more upscale TFT display of KTM Duke higher-end models in an effort to maintain costs at a reasonable level.

Range of colours

KTM makes the Duke 160 available in three bold colours, Electronic Orange, Atlantic Blue, and Silver Metallic Matte, to appeal to young riders who desire style combined with performance.

Direct comparison with the Yamaha MT 15 V2 and the KTM 160 Duke gives the latter an edge in terms of power and features but at a little higher cost. The Yamaha MT 15 V2 is complimented for its mileage and large user base, but the naked sportiness of the Duke 160, its sensitive handling due to high-grade suspension system, and all-new features give it a strong contender in the fiercely expanding 150-160cc segment.

Mass entry expected

The Duke 160 will attract riders looking for a top-of-the-line urban commuter with sporty heritage and cutting-edge technology, while providing KTM's signature aggressive design and performance DNA. With this launch, KTM strengthens its position in India's mass-entry level performance motorcycle segment, ready to appeal to enthusiasts as well as mass-market consumers who want reliability together with thrill on the roads.

Overall, the KTM Duke 160 is a persuasive combination of power, design, and features in its price category and should be a strong consideration for buyers looking at alternatives such as the Yamaha MT 15 V2. The introduction demonstrates KTM's focus on furthering its penetration of India's important mid-capacity bike market with a new, young product.
