Is the screenless Polar Loop the holy grail of fitness trackers?

New Delhi [India], July 27 (ANI): I think the era of the smartwatch is over. Except for expensive watches as we call them ultra or max, I don’t see people opting for smartwatches. The latest trend in my opinion is about stripping the noise away and this is when my quest for such fitness trackers started. That’s how I came across the Polar Loop, which is designed for people who want the insights of a smartwatch without the relentless buzzing, glowing, and screen-tapping like me.

This one is a close competitor to heavyweights like WHOOP but the Loop Gen 2 comes with the advantage of a one-time price tag which is currently around Rs 16,999. Meaning there are absolutely zero mandatory subscription fees.

All this made me think of it as the holy grail for a minimalist fitness enthusiast. But is it really a great fitness tracker or just another product to cash in on the trend of screenless smart fitness trackers? I’ve tested it extensively, so let me tell you all about the Polar Loop and help you understand if this one makes any sense for you or not.

Let’s start with the design:

Every time I see the Polar Loop, I get three words: subtle, stylish, and weightless. It’s lightweight too, as it’s just 29 grams with the strap. At times, I actually forget that I’m wearing it. The tracker itself is made of a stainless steel core body and has this velcro-style fabric for the strap that fits really well on my wrist. Available in refined lifestyle colors like Night Black, Greige Sand, and Brown Copper, it doesn’t look like a piece of clinical health tech. Many times, people thought I was wearing a Whoop band or some ultra-luxury fashion accessory. There are no buttons. There is no vibration motor. There is no LED indicator. It just quietly monitors my vitals in the background. It also comes with a WR30 water resistance rating, so I am not worried while taking showers or enjoying the rain. This extreme minimalism also translates to brilliant endurance. The 170 mAh battery easily delivers up to 8 days of continuous tracking on a single charge. You aren’t tethered to a wall socket every other night, making the commitment to wearing it daily much easier to swallow.

Under the hood:

Polar’s sensor technology is highly regarded in the athletic world, and the Loop doesn’t pull punches when it comes to the fundamentals. Equipped with Polar’s Precision Prime OHR Gen 3.5 sensor, the 24/7 continuous heart rate tracking is remarkably reliable, keeping pace perfectly with traditional smartwatches during steady-state activities. It automatically detects movement, tracks your steps, and handles the core metrics with precision. However, calorie tracking can feel wildly generous at times, occasionally showing insane daily burns of 5,000 calories or more.

However, minimalism does mean a few hardware sacrifices. There is no altimeter for tracking elevation on hikes, and it lacks blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring–a feature that has practically become a default even on budget smartwatches today. It also struggles to detect midday power naps, a strange omission for a device so heavily focused on recovery.

Data overload:

The hardware is stripped back, but the data it captures is anything but. To see what the Loop is actually doing, you have to open the Polar Flow companion app–and it is a lot to take in. The app is an absolute flood of information. It uses proprietary algorithms like Sleep Plus Stages, SleepWise, and Nightly Recharge to break down your exact REM cycles, autonomic nervous system (ANS) charge, breathing rates, and heart rate variability. For an elite athlete or a serious data nerd, this is a goldmine of actionable intelligence.

But for the rest of us? Well, it might look like a messy spreadsheet. I couldn’t find any simple or quick way to glance and get a summary. I have to really dig through the menus to understand my own body. This is a gap I noticed between the power of hardware capturing so much data and how confusingly the app presents it.

The anxiety of being quantified:

I love the physical design. I love not having another screen to look at. But there is something inherently jittery about having a dense array of sensors strapped to you, quantifying your existence every second of the day. We look to screen-free trackers to detach and find some peace. Yet, knowing that every heartbeat, every restless turn in bed, and every idle hour on the couch is being meticulously recorded can actually induce a subtle kind of anxiety. It feels less like a passive lifestyle accessory and more like a relentless medical monitor that never blinks. For someone who already juggles notifications, deadlines, and screen time, adding a constant background auditor in the form of sensors working 24/7 to my biological functions made me surprisingly uncomfortable.

In the end:

The Polar Loop is a great piece of engineering that delivers exactly what it promises. If you want the deep, accurate health insights of a premium tracker without being held hostage by a monthly subscription model, this is currently one of the most honest deals on the market. But if you are someone who just wants a general pulse on your daily movement–and if the idea of being constantly analyzed makes you a bit claustrophobic–you might want to skip this one. Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss, and you don’t need a deeply calibrated algorithm to tell you that you’re tired.

My rating: 3.5/5
