India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) is undergoing a major revision, effective 22 September 2025. The government has simplified the tax structure into two main slabs—5% and 18%, replacing the older, more complicated multi-slab system. This reform is designed to reduce the tax burden on consumers and businesses, making everyday purchases more affordable.

New GST Portal to Track Your Savings

To help consumers understand the impact of these changes, the government has launched a dedicated website savingwithgst.in.  Shoppers can compare prices before and after the GST changes by adding items to a digital cart. The portal displays three price points: the base price, the old VAT price, and the new GST price.

The website covers a wide range of categories, including groceries, snacks, household items, electronics, kitchenware, and lifestyle products. For example, one liter of milk costs ₹63.60 under VAT but will be ₹60 under the new GST. This tool allows consumers to plan purchases and calculate potential savings with ease.

Car Prices Fall Across Brands

Automakers are passing on the benefits of GST cuts to consumers. Mahindra & Mahindra has already reduced prices by up to ₹1.56 lakh, effective from 6 September 2025. Starting 22 September, Toyota and Renault vehicles will also see significant reductions.

Notable Mahindra price cuts include the Thar 2WD Diesel (₹1.35 lakh), Thar 4WD Diesel (₹1.01 lakh), Scorpio Classic (₹1.01 lakh), Scorpio-N (₹1.45 lakh), XUV700 (₹1.43 lakh), Bolero/Neo (₹1.27 lakh), and XUV3OO Diesel (₹1.56 lakh).

Toyota reductions range from ₹48,700 to ₹3.49 lakh across models like Glanza, Taser, Rumion, HyRider, Crysta, HyCross, and Fortuner. Renault’s Kwid, Triber, and Kiger are now cheaper by ₹55,095, ₹80,195, and ₹96,395, respectively. These reductions make vehicles, especially small cars and SUVs, more affordable for buyers.

Wider Benefits of GST Reform

The GST overhaul impacts more than just cars. Daily essentials such as soaps, toothpaste, and Indian breads now fall under the 5% tax slab, lowering everyday expenses. In healthcare, life-saving drugs and medical devices are taxed at 5% or even 0%, improving accessibility. Electronics and appliances, including TVs, air conditioners, and two-wheelers, now attract 18% GST instead of 28%, further reducing costs for consumers.

Tips to Maximize Your Savings

To make the most of the GST reform:

  1. Check savingwithgst.in  for accurate price comparisons.

  2. Know the new GST rates for the products you plan to buy.

  3. Plan major purchases: For cars and high-value items, buying after 22 September ensures maximum savings.

The GST 2025 reform simplifies India’s tax system and eases financial pressure on consumers. By using tools like the GST portal and staying informed about new rates, buyers can save significantly on groceries, household items, electronics, and automobiles.
