Apple is getting ready for one of the biggest iPhone launches in recent memory. In keeping with Apple’s practice of releasing products in the second week following the US Labor Day holiday, the iPhone 17 series is anticipated to make its debut in early September.

Although Apple has not yet formally confirmed the date, industry insiders predict that the launch will probably occur on September 9 or September 10. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, these dates align with the tech giant’s usual iPhone event schedule.

The iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max are the four new iPhone models that Apple intends to release this year. In addition to these, Apple is anticipated to introduce new wearables, the Apple Watch Series 11, Watch SE 3, and Watch Ultra 3, showcasing its growing ecosystem at the event.

New Design Changes: Thinner Body and Camera Shift

Leaks suggest that Apple is tweaking the design of its next-gen iPhones. Instead of the typical vertical rear camera arrangement, some models—particularly the iPhone 17 Air and Pro models—may have a horizontal arrangement.

With this modification, Apple’s design language has undergone a substantial adjustment.

Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air may be far thinner than the current iPhone 16 Pro by around 2 mm. This might preserve the device’s strong performance while making it lighter and more comfortable to hold.

Display Upgrades: Smoother Experience for All

Apple is also planning changes in display sizes and features. The standard iPhone 17 could see a jump in screen size from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, giving users a broader viewing area.

In a big upgrade, the 120Hz refresh rate, once exclusive to Pro models, may now be available in the regular iPhone 17 variants. However, the ProMotion adaptive refresh technology is likely to remain exclusive to the high-end versions.

Additionally, a new scratch-proof and glare-resistant display covering might be added to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. According to reports, manufacturing problems caused Apple to postpone this functionality earlier. With those problems resolved, the tech could finally debut, offering better visibility in bright environments and reducing screen damage.

Next-Gen Performance: A19 Chip and Better Cooling

Apple is expected to power the entire iPhone 17 lineup with its new A19 processor. This chipset will improve both performance and energy efficiency, helping deliver smoother gameplay and longer battery life.

Apple may include a vapor chamber cooling technology in the Air and Pro models to enable high-performance jobs like 4K video editing or gaming. Overheating over prolonged use might be avoided with this cutting-edge cooling solution.

Wi-Fi 7 is also anticipated to be included in all four versions for quicker connectivity. The base model will probably have 8GB of RAM, while the Air and Pro models might have 12GB.

The camera system may see significant enhancements with the iPhone 17 series. It is anticipated that the front camera would increase from 12MP to 24MP, providing sharper video calls and better selfies, particularly in low-light conditions.

The iPhone 17 base model’s 48MP primary sensor on the back will not be replaced. However, the Pro versions might continue to be the only ones with features like telephoto zoom and other sophisticated photography options. The Pro Max may also get a mechanical aperture system that would enable it to automatically adapt to different lighting conditions for better photos.

Battery and Charging: Bigger Packs, Slightly Faster Speeds

Apple has not revealed battery specifications yet. However, as all of the phones in the lineup have larger screens, it is anticipated that the batteries will be larger in order to sustain or increase usage durations.

Apple may also increase charging speeds to 35W, which would be an improvement over previous models. However, it still lags behind Android competitors that support 100W or more.

Prices May Increase This Year: Global and India Impact

If Apple sticks to tradition, media invites for the launch event will go out in the first week of September. Pre-orders are likely to begin shortly after the announcement, with sales starting September 12 or September 19.

This year, consumers might have to pay more. Analyst Edison Lee from Jefferies suggests that the iPhone 17 Air, Pro, and Pro Max may cost $50 more than their predecessors due to higher tariffs and component prices.

Here’s a look at possible US pricing:

  • iPhone 17: $829 (approx ₹72,600)
  • iPhone 17 Air: $979 (approx ₹85,700)
  • iPhone 17 Pro: $1,049 (approx ₹91,900)
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: $1,249 (approx ₹1,09,400)

In India, prices are generally higher because of import duties and taxes. Last year, the iPhone 16 started at ₹79,900, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max was ₹1,44,900. Although Apple surprised Indian buyers in 2024 by lowering Pro model prices compared to iPhone 15, it remains unclear whether that trend will continue this year.

Apple Bets Big on iPhone 17

Apple’s upcoming launch aims to combine innovation and performance. The iPhone 17 series has the potential to fundamentally alter Apple’s approach to high-end smartphones with its enhanced display, more powerful camera, and more compact design. In a market as price-sensitive as India, it is unclear whether customers are ready for a price increase.
