A tailor in Gujarat’s Valsad experienced a moment of disbelief when he received an electricity bill amounting to ₹86 lakh—an amount that exceeded the property value of his shop. Muslim Ansari, who co-manages New Fashion Tailor with his uncle, typically pays his bills via UPI, with charges rarely crossing ₹2,000. This unexpected figure left him both stunned and deeply concerned.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes. How could such an error occur? I immediately visited the electricity board office to address the issue,” said Ansari.

Error in Meter Reading

The tailoring shop, located in Chor Gali, sources electricity from the Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL), which serves over 32 lakh consumers across seven districts in south Gujarat. Upon investigation, DGVCL officials discovered that the inflated bill resulted from an error in meter reading.

“The individual recording the meter reading mistakenly added two extra digits—’10’—to the actual reading. This error resulted in the ₹86 lakh bill. We have corrected the mistake and issued a revised bill of ₹1,540,” explained Hitesh Patel, an employee of the power company.

An Unlikely Attraction

The incident has brought unexpected attention to New Fashion Tailor. Curious locals have been flocking to the shop, snapping photos of the inflated bill. With humor, Ansari joked, “Maybe I should start charging for these photo sessions!”
