Christy Martin began her boxing journey in 1989 after meeting her manager and future husband, Jim Martin. She continued to fight professionally until 2012 and holds the distinction of being the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated
However, Martin’s life has been marked by significant struggles outside the ring. In 2010, her husband attacked her, stabbing her multiple times and shooting her in the chest, leaving her for dead. Miraculously, Martin managed to escape and flag down a passerby, who rushed her to the hospital. Two years later, Jim Martin was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder with a firearm.
