Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has written to President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging them to withdraw or forfeit the President’s Police Medal and Police Medal awarded to Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. Adhikari accused Goyal of “shameful conduct” during the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
In a post on X, Adhikari shared, “I have written to President Droupadi Murmu requesting the withdrawal of the President’s Police Medal and Police Medal from Vineet Goyal, IPS, due to his reprehensible actions during the investigation of the RG Kar Medical College doctor’s rape and murder case.” He also alleged Goyal’s involvement in destroying material evidence and inaction during vandalism at the hospital on August 14, 2024.
Adhikari claimed that Goyal attempted to sabotage the investigation to appease the political establishment in West Bengal, with the intention of concealing corruption within the state’s health sector. He further stated that Goyal’s actions have tarnished the long-standing reputation of the Kolkata Police and worsened the law and order situation in the state.
He also accused Goyal of shielding influential individuals and argued that his behavior has brought “great shame” to both West Bengal and India. Adhikari urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene and censure the state government for failing to take appropriate action, in line with guidelines regarding the withdrawal of such medals.
In a new development in the case, the victim’s family has accused the Kolkata Police of offering them money while they were grieving. The victim’s aunt criticized the police for their lack of responsibility, claiming they became inactive after the last rites were completed but had surrounded the family beforehand with a large police presence.
