At a little after midnight on Wednesday, a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) that was thought to be carrying four people swerved over Goa’s Zuari Bridge and plunged into the river almost 100 feet below, according to police.
Divers from the Indian Navy are working with the search teams to help find the car and its occupants.
Eyewitnesses claim that the accident happened at around one in the morning on Wednesday night when the driver lost control of the car and slammed into the balustrade. When the balustrade gave way, the car fell into the murky waters below.
Aleixo Sequeira, a congressman from the Nuvem district, reported that a family from his district was reported missing and was not available.
“The car is said to belong to Priscilla Cruz. The car is not at the residence of the family and the members are not traceable. I hope it is not true,” Sequeira said, adding that he wasn’t sure how many people were travelling in the car when the accident took place
According to a senior police official, it slammed into the bridge railings before falling into the river.
The personnel further quoted the eyewitness and said that the car was being driven by a women.
Between Margao and Panji, the bridge is situated on a national highway.
