West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee urged PM Modi for stricter central laws and swift punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder. In her letter, sent following the nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, Banerjee emphasized the need for time-bound disposal of such cases. She announced that the state assembly would pass an amendment next week to ensure capital punishment for convicted rapists. While awaiting a response from the Prime Minister, Banerjee mentioned receiving a communication from the Union Women and Child Development minister.
