The Supreme Court in the case Anti-Corruption Council Of India Trust v. Ministry Of Home Affairs and Ors, observed and has dismissed the Public Interest Litigation, PIL moved seeking purity test of several brands of honey sold in the market due to various reports wherein it claimed that many major brands selling honey are indulging in adulteration.
The bench comprising of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Rajesh Bindal in the case observed and has stated that this court is not inclined to entertain the petition moved under Article 32 of the Constitution of India.
In the present case, the Public Interest Litigation, PIL is moved by an NGO named ‘Anti-Corruption Council of India Trust’.
The Apex Court in April 2021 had issued the notice in the matter to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The petitioner in the plea claimed that most of the honey sold in the Indian markets were adulterated with sugar syrup and the increased consumption of sugar, will cause health problems in the population, the petitioner had pointed out.
The petitioner in the plea also cited a report from the Centre for Science and Environment, wherein it claimed that the Indian brands were using a modified sugar imported from China which was helping bypass adulteration tests in the country.
Therefore, the petitioner supported the said claim by highlighting the increase in import of fructose syrup from China into India in recent years.
Accordingly, the court dismissed the plea.
