The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the appointment of four Calcutta High Court judges as permanent judges.
The said appointment comes after the Supreme Court Collegium bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud passed a resolution to the same effect on 18th January 2024.
The Supreme Court Collegium bench calos comprises of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice BR Gava passed the resolution recommending permanent appointments for the following judges of the Calcutta High Court:
i) Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul)
ii) Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury
iii) Justice Ananya Bandyopadhyay
iv) Justice Rai Chattopadhyay
Justice Lapita Banerji (PHC: Calcutta), who was being transferred to Punjab and Haryana High Court, last year, was appointed as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court against a vacancy of the permanent judge at the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Subhendu Samanta has also been appointed for a fresh one-year term as an additional judge from May 18, 2024.
The central government has notified the appointment of four Calcutta High Court judges as the permanent judges.
