Led by SAD Fateh, a delegation met with the President to request Amritpal’s release from jail so he can take his oath as an MP and participate in the parliamentary process.
Supporters of Amritpal Singh, the leader of “Waris Punjab De” who is currently imprisoned in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam, arrived in Delhi on Saturday to meet the President. Led by Shiromani Akali Dal Fateh, a delegation met with the President to request Amritpal’s release from jail so he can take his oath as a Member of Parliament and participate in the parliamentary process. The President assured them that appropriate and just steps would be taken in the matter.
The delegation also submitted a memorandum to the President regarding their request. Jaswinder Singh Kahan Singh Wala, President of Shiromani Akali Dal Fateh, stated that Amritpal is being prosecuted under the National Security Act (NSA). The case is initially handled by the state government and then taken up by the central government. He alleged that the actions against Amritpal are a result of collusion between both governments. Jaswinder Singh warned that if the government does not allow Amritpal to take his oath, they will escalate their struggle.
It is noteworthy that Amritpal Singh won the Lok Sabha election from Khadoor Sahib with the highest number of votes in the state. He is currently detained under the NSA in Dibrugarh Jail. Recently, Amritpal’s mother and wife visited him in the Assam jail. His lawyer has written to the jail administration and the Punjab government requesting his release so that Amritpal can take his oath as an MP.
