Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian opener, has taken the names of three greats of his era who he believed would have achieved high levels of success in the India Premier League (IPL).
Gavaskar categorically took the names of three India cricketers from his playing days who would have performed brilliantly in the IPL. He revealed the name of Kapil Del, the winning captain of the 1983 World Cup, and then another member of that winning squad, Sandeep Patil, and his last choice was leggie BS Chandrashekhar, whose strange action he believed would have helped him a lot in white-ball cricket.
Gavaskar went on to say that Sandeep Patil, as a batsman, can rip through any attack with his attacking nature of play. In fact, Patil didn’t spare bowlers of the calibre of Bob Willis of England and Dennis Lillie of Australia in his playing time. Kapil was a perfect player in all formats. Gavaskar bet for Chandrashekhar in the T20 format as well because his unique bowling action was not only suitable for red-ball cricket but he would be a surprise package in the ODI and T20 formats as well, Gavaskar said during a Q&A session on Star Sports.
Gavaskar also chose the team that he would prefer to be a part of. He further added that the Mumbai Indians were his first choice and that he would like to play under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
His second choice team is Chennai Super Kings for two reasons: firstly, the Chennai owners are fans of cricket, and their contribution is immense to the development of the game. The other reason he mentioned was that he would have got chance to sit in the dressing room with Dhoni. MS Dhoni is a cool customer and never reacts harshly to his teammates mistakes. Therefore, Gavaskar supports Dhoni a lot.
