Businessman and close associate of Ratan Tata, Suhel Seth, expressed his deep sorrow on Thursday as he paid tribute to the legendary industrialist. Seth, visibly emotional, said there would never be anyone like Tata, a figure revered by millions. His remarks came as the cremation of Ratan Tata was scheduled to take place later in Worli, Mumbai.
Seth stated that every Indian has been touched by the demise of the beloved icon, who passed away late Wednesday night at Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai. He praised Tata’s contributions, not just to business but also for his compassion towards both people and animals.
Seth remembered Ratan Tata as a man of “great decency, dignity, and compassion.” He referred to him as a moral compass for India, living his life with courage and love for the country. “I don’t think there will be another Ratan Tata,” he said, noting that the entire nation is mourning Tata’s passing due to his inherent kindness and character.
Seth emphasized how Tata’s principles, including his love for both people and dogs, were fundamental to his life. “What he will leave in India is a great character, humanism, and a legacy that people will love to follow,” Seth said, highlighting Tata’s enduring impact on society.
In a personal anecdote, Seth recalled Ratan Tata’s deep affection for his dogs, sharing a story about how the industrialist once declined an invitation from King Charles, then Prince Charles, to Buckingham Palace to receive a lifetime achievement award because one of his dogs was unwell. This act, Seth said, was a testament to Tata’s unique compassion and humanity.
Ratan Tata passed away at 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, at Breach Candy Hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital for several days prior. His family released a statement, expressing solace in the outpouring of love and respect for the industrialist. The statement read: “While he is no longer with us in person, his legacy of humility, generosity, and purpose will continue to inspire future generations.”
Earlier in the day, Ratan Tata’s mortal remains were brought to the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai’s Nariman Point, where the public could pay their last respects until 4 p.m. His cremation is set to take place in Worli later today.
As preparations for Ratan Tata’s cremation are underway, Mumbai Traffic Police closed the Marine Drive road beyond the Oberoi Hotel. The road leading to NCPA has been cordoned off to manage the expected crowds and ensure smooth proceedings.
