Storm Bert Unleashes Chaos: Snowstorms, Flood Alerts, And Blizzards Disrupt UK

Storm Bert caused severe weather across UK disrupting travel with snow, rain, and winds of up to 60 mph expected to continue over the weekend. The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings, while flood alerts are in effect for parts of England and Scotland.

Weather Warnings in Place

Most regions are under yellow warnings for wind, rain, or snow, while amber warnings for severe weather cover areas in northern England and central Scotland. Ireland’s counties face a rare red warning for heavy rain, effective until 10 a.m.

Regions including London, East Anglia, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Hull, and parts of the Midlands remain unaffected by warnings for now. However, National Highways has issued a “severe weather alert” for snow in Yorkshire and northeast England, valid from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Disruption to Travel and Events

Snowfall forced road closures in Yorkshire, including the A628 between the A616 Hollingworth and the A57 Flouch, and the A66 Trans-Pennine route between the A6 and the M6 (J40). Rail services in Scotland will face speed restrictions on key lines, including the West Highland Line and the West Coast Mainline.

In Scotland, Perth and Kinross Council canceled its annual Perth Christmas lights switch-on event, citing safety concerns.

‘Multiple Hazard Event’

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern described Storm Bert as a “multiple hazard event,” forecasting up to 40 cm of snow on higher ground in northern England and Scotland. Strong winds may cause blizzards, power outages, and dangerous travel conditions.

“This snow will accumulate quickly, causing blizzards over hills and a significant risk of power interruptions due to snow on power lines,” McGivern said.

Rapid Thaw Expected

By Saturday afternoon, temperatures are expected to rise sharply as milder Atlantic air moves in, leading to a rapid thaw.

What the Weather Warnings Mean

– Yellow: Disruption is likely, precautions are advised.

– Amber: Widespread disruption is expected, travel plans may need to change.

– Red: Reserved for life-threatening weather with significant travel impacts.

Travelers are urged to stay informed of updates and plan accordingly as Storm Bert continues to impact the UK.
