In her letter, sent following the nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, Banerjee emphasized the need for time-bound disposal of such cases. She announced that the state assembly would pass an amendment next week to ensure capital punishment for convicted rapists. While awaiting a response from the Prime Minister, Banerjee mentioned receiving a communication from the Union Women and Child Development minister.
