At the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) general council meeting held in Chennai on Sunday, M K Stalin, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, was re-elected to the position of party president for a second consecutive term.

The positions of general secretary and treasurer, respectively, were chosen without opposition for veteran stalwarts Durai Murugan and TR Baalu.

On October 7, only the three of them submitted nominations for the positions they were seeking. The party has appointed K N Nehru as its principal secretary.

Significantly, Kanimozhi Karunanidhi was promoted from her position as head of the DMK’s women’s branch to deputy general secretary.

Along with Periyasamy, K Ponmudy, A Raja, and Anthiyur Selvaraj, she is presently one of the five deputy general secretaries.

Following the passing of his father and the outgoing M Karunanidhi on August 7, Stalin was elected as the DMK’s president on August 28.

Since then, the DMK has won numerous elections, including the local body elections last year and this year, the 2019 parliamentary elections, the 2021 assembly elections, which restored the party to power in Tamil Nadu after a decade.

Elections within the DMK for a variety of positions were held, and the process was completed by the end of September.
