Inside Mawlynnong: God’s Own Garden

Referred to as “God’s Own Garden,” Mawlynnong is located in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district. The village became famous worldwide after Discover India magazine declared it the cleanest Asian village. Mawlynnong belongs to the Khasi community, who religiously stick to their traditional way of life and value cleanliness above everything.

Fruit orchards, splashing streams, and thick evergreen forests create a postcard-worthy experience for tourists visiting Mawlynnong. The people’s clean living habits and cleanliness have also turned the village into a model village.

A close-by point of interest is the famous Nohwet Living Root Bridge, a man-made wonder built through the cultivation of the Ficus Elastica tree’s aerial roots. The living bridge, cultivated through generations, exhibits the brilliance of Khasi artisanship and has grown to symbolize nature and tradition living in sync.

With his visit, Sachin Tendulkar has not only highlighted Mawlynnong’s beauty but also inspired many to seek out and celebrate India’s hidden ecological and cultural treasures.
