Vinod Kambli Agrees to Kapil Dev’s Rehab Offer, Ready for 15th Attempt Amid Financial Struggles: ‘I Have No Fear’

Vinod Kambli has agreed to the proposal from Kapil Dev and the 1983 World Cup-winning team to enter rehabilitation. The team offered their support on the condition that Kambli would take the necessary steps to improve his situation. Kambli expressed his willingness to take the offer, saying he fears nothing as long as his family is with him.

Financial Struggles and Health Concerns

Kambli is currently facing financial challenges. While he’s not struggling to survive, his financial situation remains tough. After a recent health scare, Kambli revealed that his only source of income is a ₹30,000 monthly pension from the BCCI. With two children to care for and 14 previous rehab attempts, Kambli is determined to try again to improve his health and financial stability.

Support from Family and Friends

When asked about his financial condition, Kambli said it was “bad,” but he praised his wife for managing everything. He also mentioned that Sunil Gavaskar was the first to respond to Kapil Dev’s offer. Kambli stated, “Sure, I have no hesitation (to enter rehab), because until I have my family with me, I’m not afraid of anything, anybody. I will complete it and return. I will come back,” in an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel.

Recent Health Scare and Public Support

Kambli recently made headlines after appearing to struggle at the unveiling of Ramakant Achrekar’s memorial, which raised concerns about his health. Kambli later confirmed that he had been in trouble but is now recovering. The Indian cricket community quickly rallied behind him, with Kapil Dev and his teammates leading the charge.

Ajay Jadeja and BCCI Offer Continued Support

Ajay Jadeja, a close friend and former teammate, visited Kambli and encouraged him to get better. Kambli believes that if necessary, the BCCI will offer their help, recalling how the board previously provided INR 1 crore for Anshuman Gaekwad’s treatment. “Jadeja is a very good friend of mine. He came to meet me and said ‘Come on, get up.’ A lot of people have called me lately. Everyone saw me,” Kambli said. “Definitely, they [BCCI] will help. Abey Kuruvilla (former India pacer) is with BCCI, he is in touch with me, and he is also in touch with my wife.”

Kambli Acknowledges Past Mistakes and Focuses on Recovery

Kambli admitted that his past struggles were due to excessive drinking but assured that he has quit drinking and smoking. His friend, Marcus Couto, a former First-Class umpire, also confirmed that Kambli has stopped. “No, no. I had stopped drinking and smoking six months ago. Did it for the sake of my kids. I used to do it earlier, but I’ve left it behind now,” Kambli said.
